The University of Pisa, founded in 1343, is one of the most ancient and prestigious universities in Europe. According to the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) 2013, the University of Pisa ranks first among Italian Universities and among the top 150 universities in the world, and in 2013 obtained the ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) label and the ECHE (Erasmus Charter for Higher Education). The academic staff is 1517 professors and researchers, 1477 administrative employees, and more than 50.000 students.
The project will be carried out at the Department of Energy, Systems, Territory and Construction engineering (DESTEC). the DESTEC includes the faculty and research staff dedicated to thermal engines, power plant technology, electrical and power engineering, grid control and design, electric mobility and internal combustion engines, heat transfer and fluiddynamics, building engineering. The Department may provide competence and expertise in several fields concerning Smart Grids and Smart Cities. Ongoing project concern micro CHP plants, integration of renewable energy into grids, integrated renewable systems for energy supply to buildings, electric and thermal energy storage and hybrid vehicles. DESTEC is also part of the Center for Biomass Research in cooperation with the Scuola Sant'Anna, for research in biomass utilization and biofuels production and utilization.


Key Investigators

Prof. Umberto Desideri, PhD, full Professor of Thermal Machines & Energy Systems, will act as the Researcher in Charge at the University of Pisa for this project.
